She’s off and running! Within days of receiving her certification as a Registered Massage Therapist at the end of August, Hayley Smith had secured not one, but two jobs in her field. She joined the Oshawa branch of the popular new franchise called Massage Addict as well as her family’s Chiropractic clinic in Cavan. One commute requires a car, but for the second job she just walks downstairs. Cavan Chiropractic has offered massage services for several years and Hayley has replaced RMT Tori Kernaghan who has relocated to the Collingwood area. She joins her mother Lynn who acts as the Office Manager of the practise and father Larry who provides professional chiropractic treatments.

Like most local RMT’s Hayley completed her training at Fleming College, surviving the grueling 2 ½ years of academic study which covers anatomy, physiology, kinesiology and psychology as well as massage techniques. She then passed the practical test administered by the governing body of the Registered Massage Program in order to add those three little letters to the end of her name.

Despite an early interest in the field sparked by practise on her willing brothers, this was not her first career choice. She was discouraged by reports of high attrition rates as this career can be quite draining and ventured into other areas at first. But after several false starts, Hayley decided to follow her intuition and seems to have found her spot. Her natural warmth and compassion should put her customers at ease, and she is eager to demonstrate her technique. She is known to be able to put some muscle behind her massage work when the customer so chooses.

With an ambitious schedule of six days of work per week, Hayley is ready to show her stuff and is saving to get some wheels. While earning money will be a welcome change from the poverty-stricken student life, what she most looks forward to is seeing the impact of her efforts on her customers, who arrive stressed out and sore and leave feeling comforted and relaxed. Sounds rewarding for both sides of the relationship. KG
