Christmas Memories in the Circle

When I used to live in the circle, my family and I would build a huge snow man on the front lawn. We would dress it up and lay down in the fluffy, cold, white stuff and make snow angels, and the neighbourhood children would all join in the fun.

We had a small wooden Santa and Reindeer set, complete with a flashing red light on Rudolph’s nose to accompany our snowman.

Road Hockey was also a popular activity with the young children on our quiet cul de sac. I enjoyed watching and hearing them scream in excitement with every goal that hit the back of the net. They were using mini hockey sticks because the children were so young.

During that time, one of the circle Moms was usually baking Christmas cookies and the kids would be invited inside the home to warm up and enjoy the freshly baked goodies served with hot chocolate topped with marshmallows. What a treat! Those refreshments gave them energy to go back outside and start again in the snowy winter wonderland.

Each home in the circle had its own decorating style and there were always lots of sparkling lights. We would always put up our large artificial tree in our front window decked out with coloured mini-lights and sparkly decorations.

Our young son David loved to help put on those decorations. He could hardly wait until the big morning to see what Santa left for him under that tree. Occasionally Santa even made a surprise visit that day, putting David on his knee and handing him a gift from his big sack.

I will always cherish those happy memories of Christmas on that cozy circle of friends. Seasons’ Greetings, everyone!
