Cavan Monaghan Celebrates Hockey Day in Canada

Photo Brigette Ayotte and Karen Graham. Teams of all ages came out to celebrate Hockey Day in Millbrook as spring weather allowed players to don t-shirts instead of ski jackets and hockey jerseys. Competition was fierce but friendly and Firefighters who were on hand to patch up broken players were severely underemployed. Perhaps next year the BIA members will enter a team to keep Council members humble. I’m sure there could find some ringers in their businesses. See you next year!

Hockey players in the Township of Cavan Monaghan enjoyed sunny spring like weather as they celebrated our national sport Millbrook style.

Communities across the Country kicked off Family Day weekend by participating in the Scotiabank Hockey Day in Canada on February 18th, 2017. Here in Millbrook, a total of seven teams of players between the ages of 10 and 15 assembled to play in the Township’s annual Road Hockey Tournament.

In the 13-15 year old age category it was the Flying Elbows going head to head with the Cold Weather Killers in a 3 game barn burning series. The Elbows edged out the Killers in an overtime win of 2-1 in the first game of the series. The Killers rallied in game two with a solid 5-2 win over the Elbows but the Elbows pulled out the win with one goal in the final game.

Over in the 10-12 year old age category, it was Fifth Line that claimed the 5 team consolation tournament title with a 4-2 victory over Millbilly Mayhem in the final round. Big League Benders took third place after beating out both the Millbilly Hat Trick Heroes and the Sixty Niners.

Still riding their high from last year’s win, Council regained their right to brag once again this year with a well-earned victory over the Fifth Line in the final exhibition game. Council continues to build their roster every year. Last year they signed Peterborough Police Services Constable Andrew Hatton who provided a solid offence to this year’s game. This year, newcomer Woody Chapman was brought in from the Cavan Monaghan Fire Department to fill out the roster.

The Township of Cavan Monaghan would like to thank all the volunteers and Downtown local businesses that made this day such a great success. It was a beautiful day to show off our hockey heart!
