Adam and Marie Shea both had other plans. Marie graduated from Trent University as a Registered Nurse, while Adam completed a degree in Political Science and History, so they were headed for an urban lifestyle. In the end, they could not resist the call of the land, and together went back to their farming roots to establish Shealand Farms located on Lifford Road north of Bethany four years ago. It’s a farm Adam knows well, having pastured his family cattle on it for many years before acquiring it for his own family.

Marie grew up on a mixed farm in Indian River where the main agricultural product was lamb and pork, while Adam’s family near Bethany focused on beef cattle. On Shealand farm, the couple raises both sheep and cattle on a small scale for now. They currently have 140 Dorset sheep and a mixed herd of beef cattle. Adam also works as an Agricultural Consultant at Thompson elevators in Pontypool, which supplies agricultural products such as seed, grains, white pea beans and edible beans, stores and sells grains, and offers risk management advice to local agricultural producers.

With two young daughters, Marie focuses on the sheep and product distribution. They take their product to local farmer’s markets including the weekly Peterborough market in coolers…
