Another Successful Belize Project Concludes

The 2017 Belize Project was a resounding success because of the generous donations received from Cavan Monaghan residents and supporters elsewhere. Donors raised a smidgen over $5000 dollars. Every cent of the donations was used in Belize to assist the children and a few adults. All participants in the Belize Project pay all of their own expenses.

In summary, the 2017 project achieved the following;

(1) Carried by plane from Canada to Belize were 200 soccer boots, of which the majority were donated by Value Village. Also on board were 150 bras, 250 knitted dolls and 75 knitted toques. Plus some school supplies.

(2) The following items were purchased in Belize and donated to seven schools. 1500 pounds of rice and beans, 150 pounds of split peas (amazingly the peas were imported from Quebec) 500 pounds of chicken wings and legs for the school lunch programs.

(3) A hundred and twenty seven fruit trees were purchased locally and donated to families and schools.

(4) Sixty seven scholarships were provided to allow students to attend school and to receive a diploma. Any student who fails to pay the school fees is denied a diploma.

(5) The initiation of a soup kitchen for students at the Richard Quinn School. This school services an area where there are no jobs and children come to school hungry and parents are unable to pay the school its fees.

(6) Two laptop computers, provided by Computer Solutions Plus, were donated, one to the local museum and the other to a family.

(7) One soccer ball was purchased for a local family who received soccer boots but had nothing to kick, with their “new” boots.

All of the above activities would not have been possible without the generous support of Canadians and the local support in Belize of Sacred Heart Center, a former convent.
